Our Founder
- Mercy Projects Foundation was founded in Uganda at St. Matia Mulumba Old Kampala Parish, in 2010. The founding steward encouraged by a friend to do something, was Stella NanKinga AlikiRiza. The aim of the founding steward was to help the poor in their different categories; but later the vision came to include four aims:
- Sustainable Water Management Solutions (SWMS)
- Climate Change Mitigation (CCM)
- Environment Conservation (EC)
- Water Shed Reclamation (WSR)
Today MPF has expanded to Tanzania with our founding steward working with the locals and training the youth to sensitize communities about environment conservation and about Sustainable Water Management Solutions (SWMS). At MPF community sensitizing is crucial. Involving people especially in the developing world can help us play our role to combat the threats of climate change.
KEY POINTS DURING COMMUNITY TRAININGS
- All waste management solutions. Please see: https://mercy-projects-foundation.webnode.com/ecosystem-conservation/
- The more forest cover we have, the more likely we are to get rain, drop temperatures, regenerate the ecological system and raise the water table.
- Since water is a finite source, we all need to learn to conserve it. Even the water table can be depleted. Most people do not know that even the water table can be exhausted. The following points express this fact:
- Excessive pumping can cause wells to no longer be able to reach groundwater.
- Ground water over drilling can increase costs. As the water table lowers, the water must be pumped farther to reach the surface, using more energy. In extreme cases, using such a well can be expensive.
- Reduced Surface Water Supplies. Groundwater and surface water are connected. When groundwater is overused, the lakes, streams, and rivers connected to groundwater can also have their supply diminished.
- Land subsidence can occur when there is a loss of support below ground. This is most often caused by human activities, mainly from the overuse of groundwater. The soil collapses, compacts, and drops.
- Water Quality Concerns especially in places where people still use latrines.
- Excessive pumping in coastal areas can cause saltwater to move inland and upward, resulting in saltwater contaminating the water supply.
